The price of energy, which has risen by 40% in the last 10 years, the quality of housing and the socioeconomic situation are the causes that aggravate the situation of energy poverty suffered by more than 400,000 people in Catalonia.
This is stated by the social entities that organize the II Catalan Conference on Energy Poverty, which will be held in the Carriers of Sants in Barcelona on the 8th and 9th of November.
The congress, promoted by municipalities and social entities, seeks to create a "common front that defends and guarantees the energy rights of citizens, especially those in situations of energy vulnerability or social exclusion," Cristina Ramos told Efe. director of Ecoserveis projects, one of the organizing entities of the congress.
The city councils of Barcelona, Sabadell and Badalona, the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, the FMC, the ACM, the Table of the Third Sector, the Alliance against Energy Poverty, and the Ecoserveis consultancy are the organizers of the Congress, which will debate on how to solve the causes that cause energy poverty.
According to Ramos, "those who suffer most from energy poverty are women and older people" and are those who make the most use of energy advice points.
These points of advice, which will be presented as a novelty in the Congress, are open to the public to, according to Ramos, "empower people to understand their own bills."
The congress will have the participation of more than 100 speakers, among which is the energy policy expert Javier García Breva, the director of the Energy Action Project platform for energy access, Marylin Smith, or the manager of the European Observatory of Energy. Energy Poverty, Harriet Thomson, among others.
According to the Institute of Statistics of Catalonia (IDESCAT), more than 400,000 people in Catalonia can not keep their home at an adequate temperature and more than 65,000 houses have been deprived of energy for economic reasons.
