The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, said today that Spanish capital investments close to 1,700 million dollars in the local tourism industry justify the implementation of programs to make Spanish become the second language of the Caribbean country.
Holness attended the opening of the Excellence Oyster Bay Hotel, where he said that the growing investment of companies from Spain in Jamaica makes it necessary to encourage greater use of the Spanish language on the island.
The Excellence Group Luxury Hotels & Resorts is a Spanish family business group specializing in hotel management and real estate development throughout the world, although with beginnings in the Caribbean.
The Prime Minister recalled that Jamaica and Spain have a relationship that goes back centuries, in addition to indicating that bilateral cooperation has never been as good as in recent years, thanks to the growing direct investment from the European country.
"So much investment from Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries in the region makes it necessary to implement programs that make Spanish our second language," said Holness.
"We take note of the Spanish investment of 1.7 billion dollars in Jamaica's tourism industry, which is evident in the 14 hotels, wellness centers and other construction projects undertaken throughout the island," he said.
Holness said that in particular 25% of the hotel rooms that have been built in Jamaica in recent years originated from Spanish investments, after citing the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two countries last May in Madrid to facilitate the strengthening of bilateral agreements in all areas.
The executive director of Excellence Group Luxury Hotels & Resorts, Antonio de Montaner, said during the opening ceremony that the opening of the complex involves an investment of 110 million dollars that will benefit Jamaica's economy globally.
"The Excellence Oyster Bay represents our true commitment to Jamaica, and throughout this process we worked with 350 local suppliers that provided goods and services worth 70 million dollars," said Montaner.
"In addition, we created more than 1,500 jobs for Jamaicans during the construction phase and another 700 new jobs related to the daily operation of the center," he said.
The Excellence Group is a family owned and operated chain specializing in hotel management and global real estate development, with a leading presence in the Caribbean.
Located on a peninsula, the Excellence Oyster Bay Hotel is a resort that offers all-inclusive service with 315 rooms with panoramic ocean views and direct access to the beach.
