The American Mikaela Shiffrin has added a new title to her record, that of supergiant world champion, something really exceptional if one takes into account that it is the first time she participates in this event in a world cup and that it was not in her range of specialties.
The Italian Sofia Goggia and the Swiss Corinne Suter completed the podium with 2 and 5 hundredths of a second more than the champion.
Until two months ago, Mikaela Shiffrin had never won a supergiant but every time she participates in one she wins. This happened in Lake Louise, Saint-Moritz and Cortina d'Ampezzo, in the World Cup this season, before proclaiming world champion in Are.
"It's really crazy … I do not know what to say," he told the German television channel ARD Shiffrin, who at just 23 years old has won everything that can be won in alpine skiing and who on Tuesday captured his room in Are world title, after the three in slalom that won in the World Championships of Schladming'13 (Austria), Vail-Beaver Creek'15 (USA) and St. Moritz'17 (Switzerland).
"It's crazy. I did not expect to be supergiant world champion, "said Shiffrin, who, during her interview in the finish zone with the aforementioned German channel, was answered by one of her commentators, the former German skier Maria Riesch – multiple Olympic gold, double world and once a winner of the World Cup, a competition in which he won 27 victories, he asked: "and why not?".
"It has been very tight"; Shiffrin answered, double Olympic champion and that advances with firm step towards its third final triumph in the Glass of the World. "We have been the first three in only five hundredths," said the super champion of Vail (Colorado), referring to the Italian Sofia Goggia, silver in the test, two hundredths; and the Swiss Corinne Suter, who captured bronze, five.
"And then there's (the German) Vicky (Rebensburg, fourth, seven hundredths). He has had very bad luck, because he came out when there was less visibility on the track. If I had taken the left when I did, I think the result would have been different, "he admitted humbly, after capturing his fourth world gold, the prodigy girl turned into a record-devitor.
"The truth is that I still do not believe it … it's crazy," insisted Shiffrin, who will also be among the gold favorites in the giant, the combined and, obviously, the slalom; and that he could opt for another title if he decided to compete in the team event.
The other candidates for the gold medal did not have their day and so the Austrian Nicole Schmidhofer, the current world champion, the Slovenian Ilka Stuhec, who has won this season the supergiant of Val Gardena, and the Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel did not even get close to the podium.
The Liechtenstein skier Tina Weirather left the track and the American Lindsey Vonn could not conclude the test to suffer a fall in the first third of the test.
Vonn, who announced his retirement last Friday after contesting the Supergigante and descent events in the World Cups, tried to go for all in his descent and after hitting with three flags consecutively, he was unbalanced and ended up crashing into the side protection net .
After five minutes in which the race was interrupted, the skier was able to incorporate by her own foot and went skiing down to the finish line, greeting the fans.
