Mexico accumulates 993 cases and 20 deaths one month after the arrival of COVID-19
One month after the arrival of the coronavirus in Mexico, your Government reported this Sunday a total of 993 confirmed cases of COVID-19, which represents an increase of 145, or 17.1%, compared to 848 the previous day. ; in addition to 20 dead, four in the last 24 hours.
In its daily press conference on pandemic data, the federal Secretariat (ministry) of Health (SSa) reported that 132 cases, 13% of the total, were community-based because they lacked an import history, so in Mexico maintains phase 2.
The Mexican health authorities detailed that 58% of the patients are men, 14% have required hospitalization and their average age is 41 years.
This weekend the contagions with the highest political profile so far were also recorded, confirming the cases of the governors of the Tabasco states, Adán Augusto López, and Hidalgo, Omar Fayad.
There are also 2,564 suspected cases that will undergo a confirmatory test in the next 24 hours.
The 993 cases counted to date represent more than triple the 316 registered just a week ago, which implies an increase of 677 patients.
Despite this panorama, the Government of Mexico still does not plan to apply drastic measures adopted by other countries, such as forced curfews, closing of borders or restriction of internal mobility, said Ricardo Cortés, general director of Health Promotion of the SSa.
"Why not contemplate the use of public force to keep people at home? Firstly, because we are not in a state of exception, we follow and uphold the idea of respect for the human rights of all and appeal to honesty and frankness of the people, "he argued at the press conference.
Mexico registered its first case of COVID-19 30 days ago. It affected a man from Mexico City who recovered after his hospitalization at the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER).
After refusing to adopt harsh policies, the Mexican government declared phase 2 of the epidemic last Tuesday, which implies a program called the National Day of Sana Distance, which recommends suspending non-essential activities in the public and private sectors.
Even the country's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador urged citizens to stay at home this Sunday, just a week after posting a video on Facebook inviting people to go out to restaurants and inns.
"The coronavirus is not the plague, we have nothing more than to be careful, comply with the recommendations, what the doctors, the specialists, the scientists are asking us: the healthy distance, that we are in our homes," said the president in a video recorded in Culiacán, Sinaloa.
Although the president is close to the governor of Tabasco, the state where he is from, and was at a press conference with the Hidalgo president on March 18, he said that the test will not be done unless it shows symptoms.
