Mexican ex president Vicente Fox refuses to be a tax evader
Former Mexican President Vicente Fox refused on Saturday to be a tax evader in responding to claims by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that one of his predecessors is under investigation for tax debts.
"I do not have any tax payments pending," said Fox, who governed Mexico from 2000 to 2006, in a message published on Saturday in his official account of Twitter's social network.
Fox, who maintains a permanent criticism of the management of López Obrador, his political rival for more than 20 years, said he does not understand the president's statements and described them as a way to defend himself for the mistakes of his government.
"What is it about, the game of" cat and mouse "? Do you defend yourself from your mismanagement?
López Obrador revealed that a former Mexican president, from whom he did not name, is investigated for tax debts by the Tax Administration Service (SAT).
"I have information that some of the ex-presidents have taxes, but that is what the SAT sees, they said that what I was living on, but I do pay my taxes," he said.
When not mentioning names, the allusion of Lopez Obrador reached the five ex-presidents of Mexico who are alive: Carlos Salinas de Gortari (1988-1994), Ernesto Zedillo (1994-2000), Vicente Fox (2000-2006), Felipe Calderón ( 2006-2012) and Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018).
The SAT issued a bulletin confirming that a former president of Mexico owes income tax (ISR) and added value (VAT) plus surcharges and the update so that the legal proceedings of the case have already begun, he said.
The name of Fox as a possible tax evader was published on Friday by the Mexican press, which indicated that he is not aware of his taxes, in addition to which he was condoned during the governments of Felipe Calderón (2006-2012) and Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018).
Former President Calderón said in his social media account that he has paid his taxes since he began working at age 16 and criticized López Obrador for making such insinuations without giving names.
"To say 'an ex-president has not paid taxes', is an insinuation that harms me and other colleagues, and I ask him to make the necessary precision," said former President Calderón.
