Mexican drug trafficker Héctor Beltrán Leyva dies of cardiac arrest

Mexican drug trafficker Héctor Beltrán Leyva, a prisoner since 2014, has died of cardiac arrest today while receiving medical care in a hospital in the Mexican city of Toluca, the Interior Ministry reported.

Nicknamed "El H" or "the engineer" and head of the drug cartel that carries his surnames, Beltrán Leyva, 56 years old, suffered chest pains in his cell at Federal Criminal Number 1, Antiplano, said Interior in a message to the media.

Before the medical emergency, the capo was taken to the hospital Adolfo López Mateos de Toluca, where he died around 4:00 pm (22:00 GMT) when he received care, said the Mexican government agency.

Beltrán Leyva was arrested in October 2014 in San Miguel de Allende, central state of Guanajuato, and since 2016 he was detained in the federal prison Altiplano, where he was facing federal prosecution for various crimes.

In April of 2017, a Mexican judge granted him an amparo against his extradition to the United States, considering that there was a procedural violation.

Mexican authorities have ordered an autopsy to confirm the causes of his death, after which the body will be handed over to his family, Gobernación said.

Héctor Beltrán Leyva took control of the cartel in 2009 on the death of his brother Arturo, who died in a shootout with the Mexican Navy in Cuernavaca, central state of Morelos.

In addition to the transfer of drugs money laundering and arms smuggling, this cartel is attributed numerous cases of kidnapping, torture and killings in the center and south of the country, particularly in the states of Morelos and Guerrero.
