Mercedes returns to the front row

The classification of the Chinese Grand Prix, the third event of the 2019 season, was presented as another chapter in the unexpected tension that has been lodged in the best teams in just three races. The one that exists between Vettel and Leclerc in Ferrari, the surprising between Bottas and Hamilton and, for all of them, the presence of Verstappen with Red Bull not far away.

The Q1 started with Bottas sending ahead of Hamilton, Verstappen, and Vettel and with Leclerc a little further away due to traffic problems. For his part, Sainz did it in twelfth place with his partner Norris flirting with the positions of danger.

In the second attempt, the above, except Recerca, remained in the pits while the good news was the seventh place of Sainz ahead of rival theorists. Of course, his partner Norris was saved by "the hairs" and was in the limit of elimination.

The drivers eliminated in Q1 were: Stroll, Russel, Kubica, Giovinazzi, Albon (did not qualify due to an accident suffered in the previous free trials)

In Q2, Bottas set the fastest time on the first attempt, this time with Vettel behind half a second behind and with different rubber compounds compared to his rivals. But at the end of the session, Hamilton gave the blow and took the best time ahead of his teammate, Vettel and Leclerc.

The pilots eliminated in Q2 were Kvyat, Perez, Raikkonen, Sainz and Norris.

And time of truth arrived. The Q3. On the first attempt Bottas was the fastest for Hamilton's surprise. Vettel, Verstappen and Leclerc, who was the last among the group of favorites. But there was still one more attempt.

Finally, the Nordic reached the "pole" with his partner just 23 thousandths away. Vettel was third, Leclerc fourth and Verstasppen fifth.
