May opens the door to extend the transition period of "brexit"

The British prime minister, the conservative Theresa May, affirmed today in the British Parliament that it would be "preferable" to extend the period of transition of the "brexit" beyond December of 2020 in certain "circumstances".

The head of government said that 95% of the issues on the table in the negotiations between London and Brussels are already agreed, although it remains to establish a mechanism to ensure that no border is lifted in Northern Ireland.

If the 21-month transition period ends without a firm trade agreement with the European Union (EU), the UK will have to take the "sovereign decision" to extend that period, or activate a security clause that forces the country to temporarily remain in the customs union, he said.
