The International Festival of Contemporary Dance of the Canary Islands celebrates its 26th edition from October 8 to 31 and does so by opening its headquarters in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. After 25 years in Maspalomas, MASDANZA arrives in the capital with a wide and varied program that will have as stages the Pérez Galdós Theater, the Cuyás Theater and the Guiniguada Theater, as well as such emblematic enclaves as the Plaza de Santa Ana, the Castillo de Mata and the José Antonio Ramos Auditorium in Doramas Park.
The Councilor for Culture of the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Encarna Galván, the Minister of Culture of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Guacimara Medina, the Deputy Minister of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Juan Marquez and the director of MASDANZA, Natalia Medina, presented the Festival program this morning. The event, which took place at the Pérez Galdós Theater, was also attended by the general director of the Auditorium and Theater Foundation, Tilman Kuttenkeuler, and the artistic director of the Cuyás Theater, Gonzalo ubani.
Distinguished with the Quality Seal of the European Association of Festivals in 2021, MASDANZA is a benchmark of international contemporary dance in which young talents of different nationalities participate and new spaces of knowledge and enjoyment are opened to citizens, as well as serves as An appeal for programmers from all over the world who find in the Festival an avant-garde sample of the dance scene. In addition, the project has an important social charge that, as the director pointed out during the presentation, aims to bring dance closer to more vulnerable groups in order to connect emotions through it.
In this way, impressive choreographies, competitions and workshops will meet during the 26th anniversary of the Festival. “I long”, from Marcat Dance, will star in the opening gala of the new edition of MASDANZA at the Pérez Galdós Theater the October 11th. Likewise, the colosseum will host among the days 20, 21 and 22 the solo contest and the choreographic contest, whose awards ceremony will take place day of 2. 3 and that will have the participation of international companies selected last June by a committee of experts. Two initiatives that make MASDANZA the only festival in Spain that has two official sections in competition.
MASDANZA also includes “Dance in open spaces”, where several Spanish companies that are part of the Red Acieloabierto circuit that includes 13 national festivals will perform on the October 8 and 19 on the Santa Ana square. Within its programming, the Festival will also pay tribute to the October 9 to which it has been its headquarters for a quarter of a century with MASDANZA Dunes, in which four Canarian formations will perform at the Viewpoint of the Dunes of Maspalomas. Another three arrivals from the Peninsula and one from Taiwan will do so at Mata Castle. days 15 and 16 during MASDANZA Showcase.
At Guiniguada Theater will take place MASDANZA Canarias the October 8 and 9, as well as MASDANZA Cinema on the 18th; while the XIII International Breakdance Championship of the Canary Islands, “Breaking MASDANZA” will have the José Antonio Ramos Auditorium of doramas park as the setting for the ‘battles’ that will take place on October 12 °. On the tables of Cuyás Theater they will pass the day 30 four Italian companies during MASDANZA Italy. Finally, it will be the Perez Galdos the space in which it is held October 25-28 the contemporary dance workshop for professionals given by the international choreographer Hung chung lai.
In different parts of the municipality it will also be carried out “The space of the body.” An initiative aimed at entities that work with people in a situation or risk of social exclusion or dedicated to health care or the elderly. For this, it will collaborate with Citizen Participation of the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; the “Activate yourself” Program, of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria; the Farrah Foundation or the Yrichen Foundation. The twenty-sixth edition of the Festival will end with the Extensions Tour, which will take from the day October 24th a selection of works for the rest of the Archipelago.
