Maribel López starts the relay at the front of Arco | Culture

The Catalan Maribel López will co-direct with Carlos Urroz the next edition of Arc, fair in which she had been acting as commercial director and curatorial programs since 2011. With this appointment Ifema, organizer of the most important contemporary art fair in Spain, wants to facilitate the change in direction after Urroz manifested his wish " undertake new projects ", once the 2019 edition is over, which will be held in Madrid from February 27 to March 3 and where Peru will be the guest country. "The first thing I think about is keeping things that now work so well in Arco. The fair is in good health, but we can not think that everything is done and we must remain alert to the changes that the art market is experiencing every day, "said Maribel López (Barcelona, 1972), after her appointment was made public.

The intention of López, art historian from the University of Barcelona, is to delve into a trend that has worked in recent editions: keep the number of participating galleries between 200 and 210 and limit the number of artists in each space. "It has been shown that it is better to delve into the work of one or two artists, that the audience reacts better, there are already sections, such as Opening and Dialogues, in which only the work of two creators is shown, and many galleries in the program general have been added to this trend, "says the new co-director of Arco whose career began in 1999 at the Galería Estrany-de la Mota in Barcelona; to pass, in 2007, to direct Maribel López Gallery, in Berlin.

"Arco is, above all, a meeting place for collectors and curators with artists and gallerists and we must continue to be so," says López, who has also been the founder of two curatorial teams: Creatures (1994-2000, in Barcelona) and The Office (2007-2010, in Berlin). His first connection with the team of the fair was in 2011 as head of the Opening section, the program that brings together the youngest galleries of the fair.

According to Ifema, the appointment of Maribel López means an endorsement of the project developed by Urroz over the last decade. "We bet on the internal talent and excellence of the people who work in our organization, recognizing their merits and the passion they put into the performance of their activity. We are convinced that this model of transition in the direction of Arco provides all the guarantees of success to give continuity to the strong impulse that has been experienced by the project led by Carlos Urroz in recent years, "comments Eduardo Lopez- Puertas, general director of Ifema.

"It has been an honor to work for more than a decade and a half, first as commercial director and later as director of the fair, in this project so important for culture and contemporary art in our country. I appreciate the support I have received from all public and private sectors. With the 2019 edition I will close a professional and personal cycle based on the conviction that the periodic renewal at the head of the great cultural institutions is very convenient to give way to new approaches and perspectives ", Carlos Urroz points out in the same press release.
