Maduro asks the IMF for 5 billion dollars to act against COVID-19

The government of Nicolás Maduro asked the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a financing of 5 billion dollars to attend the coronavirus pandemic that reached Venezuela, where up to now there have been 33 cases and no deaths.

"We went to his honorable body to request their evaluation, regarding the possibility of granting Venezuela a financing facility for 5 billion dollars from the Emergency Fund of the Rapid Financing Instrument (IFR)," says the letter signed by Maduro and released this Tuesday.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza, who posted the letter dated last Sunday on Twitter, commented on the same social network that this loan would serve "to strengthen the response capabilities" of the local health system "in the containment of COVID-19" .

"Another timely action to protect the people," added Arreaza.

The text is addressed to the managing director of the IMF, the Bulgarian Kristalina Georgieva, and refers to the "hard and unexpected battle that the world is facing today against the outbreak of the new coronavirus."

That money, the letter continues, will contribute "significantly to strengthen" the detection and response systems of this disease.

The Chavista government has quarantined the country to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and has suspended all work and school activities except for priority areas such as health and food.

RIVALITY WITH THE IMF

Last October, Maduro assured that the Ecuadorian people "defeated" the IMF, two days after the Lenin Moreno government repealed the economic measures that caused a wave of protests in the streets of his country for more than a week.

"The people of Ecuador had a great victory against the Monetary Fund, they twisted the arm of the IMF, they defeated the IMF, it is great news from the peoples of South America, Latin America," said Maduro.

Frequently, the Venezuelan president has accused the IMF of imposing "economic packages" on Latin American and Caribbean countries, and has said that the multilateral is "the main instrument of the devil in the world."
