Macron favorable to call a referendum on climate policy

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, was favorable Friday to call a referendum on the climate policy that the country should adopt, at the end of a citizen's convention that his Government will organize on this aspect.

"I think there are some measures that can be submitted to a referendum, because that will allow us to share the concern about the matter," the president said before a group of 150 citizens chosen by lottery to integrate the citizen convention.

This group, which will be advised by experts in the field, must present its conclusions next April to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% until 2030 compared to those of 1990.

Macron said that some of the proposals adopted by that group will be submitted to a referendum, although he did not specify whether directly or after they had been converted into a law by Parliament.
