The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, promised on Sunday to do everything possible to support the tourism sector through the development of marginalized areas and the reduction of insecurity, by inaugurating the 44th edition of the Tourism Tianguis in the port city of Acapulco .
In his inaugural message, the president said that his project for the sector is based on two fundamental strategies, the first of which is the urban development of the popular colonies of tourist cities "to lessen, temper, the contrasts of hotel areas of great development and the marginalized colonies ".
He specified that in the municipality of Acapulco, in the southern state of Guerrero, this program has already begun in Renacimiento City, where his government plans to invest some 500 million pesos (25.6 million dollars) this year, and another in 2020, for the improvement of streets and the installation of drinking water networks and sanitary drainage.
The second strategy, he added, is to work throughout the country to reduce violence and guarantee peace and tranquility.
"Public security has been neglected and we are working so that there are no robberies, no homicides and no kidnappings, there is now a greater security interest and we are going to continue with the National Guard, which has already been approved by federal senators and deputies, and 32 local congresses in the country, "he said.
For its part, the Secretary of Tourism of the Federal Government, Miguel Torruco, said that tourism contributes 8.8% of the national gross domestic product, participation greater "to the sectors such as mining, oil, the primary sector , construction and financial services. "
He said that by 2019 the arrival of 43.3 million international tourists is expected, "which will mean a 4.7% increase over the previous year, and spending will be 23,600 million dollars, with an increase of 10.6% "
He noted that only last January, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics, the income of foreign currency for international travelers amounted to 2,289 million dollars, 17.7% more than in the same month of 2018.
Torruco said that it is expected that during the government of President Lopez Obrador (2018-2024) will be built around 22,000 new hotel rooms annually, "which will reflect the confidence of investors in the current administration and the tourism sector, which generates 4.2 million direct jobs and just over six million indirect jobs ".
When detailing the plans in the sector, he announced that by the autumn of this year "the first of four luxury cruises will be inaugurated, proudly with the Mexican flag, that will sail the Mexican coasts".
The Ministry of Tourism reported that for this fourth edition of the Tianguis, which will run until April 10, it has achieved a record of business appointments of 47,114, surpassing the record registered last year in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, of 44,714 , for a 5.3% increase so far.
