Lion Air hires a private company to find the crashed plane in Java

Indonesian low-cost airline Lion Air announced today that it has hired a private company to locate the wreckage and unidentified black box of the plane crashed in the Java Sea on October 29, which caused 189 deaths, all occupants .

"The advanced search is a commitment of Lion Air as a result of the request of the families (of the victims)," said the spokesman of the airline, Mandala Prihantoro Danang, in a statement.

The new search period will last 10 days, has a budget of 38,000 million rupees (2.3 million euros or 2.6 million dollars) and will be in charge of the MPV Everest specialized ship.

The ship is scheduled to arrive from Malaysia on Wednesday in the area of the wreck, near the Jakarta Bay, after a delay caused by bad weather.

The Everest MPV can maintain the position without anchoring, a necessary function due to strong currents and oil and gas pipelines located about 30 meters deep in the muddy sea floor of the waters near Cape Karawang, where the accident occurred.

The National Transport Safety Committee (KNKT) recommended for weeks the convenience of using a specialized boat due to adverse conditions in Karawang, but discrepancies in funding have delayed the process.

The Indonesian search and rescue agency (Basarnas) announced on November 10 the end of operations to find the remains of the victims.

The authorities have identified 125 of the deceased and have assured that they will continue searching for the black box that records the conversation among the pilots in the cabin, whose beacon has 90 days of autonomy, according to the KNKT.

The other black box, which records the flight data of the aircraft, was found a few days after the accident and has allowed the investigation of the cause of the incident to begin.

The preliminary report on the accident published at the end of November centers its findings on the operating manual of the crashed model, a Boeing 737 Max 8, the arrangement of defective sensors on the last four flights and the performance of the pilots.

The aircraft crashed 13 minutes after taking off from Jakarta after the pilots had difficulties with the aircraft's controls.
