The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, travels to Lithuania on Monday to see first-hand the work of the Air Force soldiers in charge of monitoring the Baltic airspace for possible intrusions by unidentified Russian planes.

Robles will arrive at the Lithuanian base in Siauliai, where a total of 130 Spanish troops with eight F-18 aircraft have been deployed since April 1, the largest Spanish deployment since their participation in similar aerial police missions.

Specifically, the Spanish Armed Forces are in command of the rapid reaction alert mission integrated into the Baltic Air Police (BAP). The bulk is made up of members of Wing 12, based in Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), under the command of Lieutenant Colonel David Soto Martínez as Force Chief.

The objective of the mission is to monitor and guarantee the integrity of NATO's eastern airspace and prevent conflicts "through credible defense and deterrence measures", through the interception of aircraft flying over its airspace without identifying it.

The Spanish contingent is deployed at the Siauliai Air Base, from where it has already operated on four other occasions (in 2021, 2020, 2016 and 2006), according to the Defense Staff (EMAD).
