Antomi Bouquets and Gerard Rodríguez, in the male category, and Omayra Farías and Eva Fernández, in the female category, were proclaimed yesterday in Las Canteras champions of the third tournament of the Mapfre Beach tennis League, a circuit sponsored by the Spanish Tennis Federation to help the athletes to resume competition after the pronounced stoppage due to confinement forced by the pandemic.
Organized by the ApPROBA Beach Tennis Club with the support of the Gran Canaria Tennis Federation, plus the main sponsorship of Mapfre, the appointment of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was the third stop of a contest whose calendar includes four venues; arrived in the capital of Gran Canaria after being held in Melilla and Vera (Almería), and that ends next weekend in Barcelona.
The Gran Canaria players Antomi Ramos, current number four in the world rankings, and Omayra Farías, who with the Catalan Eva Fernández forms the best national couple in the national ranking, add up with the gold they won yesterday at Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria three victories out of three possible so far in this edition of the Mapfre League.
For his part, for the Catalan Gerard Rodríguez, number nine in the world and Antomi’s regular companion, yesterday’s is his second triumph on the circuit, since Ramos played in Melilla with Santi Puente.
The silver medal in the men’s category went to the couple formed by Saulo Tejada and Víctor López; while, in the female, Grimanesa Santana and Carolina Miranda were runners-up.
The Gran Canaria competition was held on the sand of Las Canteras beach throughout the weekend with the participation of male and female players from Melilla, Andalusia and Catalonia, as well as the Canaries.
On Saturday the mixed and sub 14 categories were disputed. In the first, Omayra Farías and Javier González took the gold and Eva Fernández and Mohamed Douri, the silver. In sub 14, Mireia Bethencourt and Isabel García won by beating Alexia Machín and Eva Santana.
This tournament has an economic endowment in prizes of 2,000 euros and is valid for the national beach tennis ranking with the highest score, as it is considered a level 1 competition.
