Lanzarote will be the venue for continental European and African qualifying regattas for the Tokyo Olympics, to be held in summer. The Canary Islands will grant the passport to compete in three Olympic sailing classes: Nacra 17, 49er and 49er FX. The event will take place between next and Friday of next week. The program includes 18 regattas, in addition to the Medal Race.
The event is co-organized by the Cabildo de Lanzarote, through SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, the Canarian Sailing Federation, Marina Rubicón and the RC Náutico de Arrecife, with the collaboration of RC Náutico de Gran Canaria, in addition to being sponsored by Promotur.
More than 100 participants of more than 30 nationalities from around the world will take part. The presence of the Gran Canaria Tara Pacheco stands out. Already with the ticket for Tokyo in his pocket, he aspires to gold in the Nacra 17 class, together with Florian Trittel from Barcelona.
In the men’s 49er modality, highlight the participation of the Cantabrian Diego Botín and the Galician Iago López, favorites to win the victory in Lanzarote waters after finishing ninth in the 2016 Rio Games and fourth in the 2019 World Cup in New Zealand, classifying Spain by country for Tokyo, in addition to proclaiming themselves 49er European champions. Andrés Barrio, sailor from RC Náutico de Gran Canaria forms a team with Antón Torrado, from RC Náutico de Torrevieja.
In 49er FX, the Galician Tamara Echegoyen and the Mallorcan Paula Barceló will be the Spanish representatives are the main attractions. It is worth highlighting the presence of María Cantero from Gran Canaria, who sails with the Galician Patricia Suárez and aspires to be Paris 2024.
