“Language scholarships are a great opportunity”
Yes, there is such a need. Despite the fact that our educational system contemplates the teaching of second languages, the truth is that we reach the pre-university stage with a level that is not sufficient to tackle the challenges of a globalized world with guarantees. It is necessary to master at least one second language in order to continue training; it is necessary to access the labor market; but it is also necessary in the day to day in which the Internet allows us to communicate, contract, buy, etc. anywhere in the world. In the Canarian labor market it is especially necessary if we take into account that the regional GDP depends to a large extent on the tourism sector, mastering several languages is essential for this sector, in any of the segments of the value chain.
How does the Ministry promote training in these skills?
From the Ministry of Education and Youth we have opted for scholarships to motivate and help young people to tackle the challenge of training in these language skills and improve their curriculum. Through a subsidy, the Ministry allocates 60,000 euros to promote these studies and has the co-financing of the Fundación Canaria Universitaria de Las Palmas. This is a great opportunity and we invite the young people of Gran Canaria to take advantage of it and obtain an official certification.
What languages can be studied?
Courses are offered in English (levels from A1 to C1), German (levels from A1 to C1), French (levels from A1 to C1), Italian (level A1) and Portuguese (level A1) of 100 teaching hours with two face-to-face sessions times a week and support from an online self-learning platform.
How can these scholarships be accessed?
There are 400 places available and pre-registration is open until Monday, February 28. These scholarships are intended for currently enrolled university students and vocational training centers and also for unemployed people with completed studies (university studies, vocational training studies or certificate of professionalism). 25% of the students who successfully complete the course will be able to access the refund of €30, the granting of scholarships for language training is established on income criteria (60%), final mark of the online platform ( 20%) and final mark of the continuous evaluation (20%). In addition, students who successfully complete the English course will be able to access a scholarship to officially certify their level with the Oxford Test of English (certifies levels A2, B1 and B2) taking into account income criteria (50%) , final grade of the course (20%) and continuous evaluation grade (30%). The exam for beneficiaries will be in July / 2022.

The labor market needs labor to promote digital solutions
The digital transformation, accelerated by the incidence of the COVID19 pandemic, urgently needs software creators and artificial intelligence tools to respond to the growing demand for digitalization of all types of processes.
The digital divide does not only affect users' access to new technologies; it also represents a gap from the point of view of the capacity of organizations to develop digitized products and services. The shortage of professionals with this profile opens up an opportunity to focus on professional training and requalification to promote the digital transformation of all sectors of activity, with the boost of the European Next Generation recovery funds themselves.
Aware of these new needs in the productive field, the University Foundation of Las Palmas has begun to design training programs that reorient the professional profile in a transversal way and in a short space of time to cover the growing demand for digital programmers and give a new opportunity to enter the workforce.
Specifically, next March a Program in Alternation with Training and Employment (PFAE), subsidized by the Canarian Employment Service, will start on the preparation and publication of web pages. On the other hand, thanks to funding from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, a specialized practical theoretical training program is being developed for students, higher education graduates and professionals who wish to reinvent themselves or become expert programmers.
The University Foundation of Las Palmas has been a pioneer in its commitment to digital skills for qualified youth, such as the 'University Expert Course on Digital Skills'. What was initially seen as complementary skills has now become a specific opportunity to incorporate young talent into the labor market and face the challenge of the digital divide.
