Koldo Aguirre, legendary ex-player and Athletic technician, passes away


Koldo Aguirre, legendary ex-player and former Athletic Club member, has died this Wednesday in Bilbao at the age of 80, according to the Red-White entity.

As footballer Aguirre, international on seven occasions, played 296 games with the red and white shirt, between 1957 and 1969, and scored 64 goals. He won two Cup titles, the first of them, with only 18 years, forming part of the 'Once Aldeanos' that won the title to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

In 1969, already in his last campaign in Athletic before retiring in Sabadell in 1970, he also participated in the Cup conquered by Athletic against Elche also in the Madrid stadium.

As a coach, Aguirre was the Atletico coach in the 1976-1977 season in which Athletic managed the Copa subchampion, after falling in the penalty shoot-out in a historic final against Betis, and the UEFA Cup. , that yielded before Juventus.

Later he also directed Hercules, Valencia, Mallorca, Logroñés, Lleida, Bilbao Athletic and Barakaldo, his last bench before practicing for several years as the club's institutional ambassador.
