Juan Marrero Portugus dies, former director of La Caja de Canarias - La Provincia


He has died at 89 Juan Marrero Portuguese (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1929), former director of La Caja de Canarias and former president of the Club Nautico de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He also participated in politics as a councilor in the municipalities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Arrecife.

Marrero Portuguese was at the head of the then-named Caja Insular de Ahorros as the maximum responsible between 1959 and 1979. Biography

Juan Marrero Portuguese studied Economics at the Complutense University of Madrid, and Chemical Industrial Expertise and Teaching in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

He was the general director of the Caja Insular de Ahorros de Gran Canaria (1959-1979) and auditor of the Audience of Canary Accounts (1996-2011). He also served as first deputy mayor of the City of Arrecife (1954-1957), second deputy mayor of the City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (1962-1967) and as procurator of the Spanish Cortes (1967-1977).

Among his other publications, it is worth mentioning The spirit of Tirma; The Viera and Clavijo, an unrepeatable school Y César Manrique and Pepín Ramírez. Two Canarian leaders in their historical context, in addition to their articles in the local press on political, administrative or insular historiography issues.

All this work was recognized with distinctions such as Favorite Son of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
