Sources from the Basque Government confirm that Juan Diego will cease to be general director of the Basque Health Service (Osakidetza) this Friday. His replacement will be the Catalan doctor Rosa Pérez Esquerdo, according to 'El Correo'. Diego, trusted by the lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, took office at the end of 2018 to pacify an organization hit by the investigation of irregularities in medical examinations of the spring of that year and in substitution of María Jesús Múgica.
Six months of pandemic, six months without any appearance of the general director of the Basque Health Service
However, during the pandemic months Diego has been in the background despite being the head of the health system. He has not offered a single public appearance and his participation in events and meetings has been very limited, to the point that he was not part of the closest committee of the former Minister of Health, Nekane Murga. Official sources indicate that this responds to the fact that they have wanted to leave the spokesperson in the hands of doctors. This Thursday night he did participate in the meeting of the crisis table of the health emergency (LABI) that ended with a recommendation of confinement in 25 Basque municipalities.
