The jury of the National Plastic Arts Award for 2020 has proposed the award of this award to José María Yturralde. The jury has recognized “his career with a high level of experimentality, which has connected art and science, and in which his work in spatial and formal research and his teaching work in the field of research on mathematical parameters stands out, together with the artistic ones. ” The award, granted by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, is endowed with 30,000 euros.
José María Yturralde is director of the Department of Painting at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Bachelor and Doctor of Fine Arts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and Academic Number of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos de Valencia.
He was born in Cuenca in 1942. In the mid-sixties he went through a stage of experimentation in “material informalism”, from which he evolved towards geometric abstraction and the “Op” that characterizes him, in which the influences of Vasarely, the Italian Spatialists and Constructivism.
In 1966 he worked at the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art in Cuenca, founded by the painter Fernando Zóbel. In 1967 he was a founding member of the Group ‘Before Art’ and began to make Kinetic Art; This interest in technology was accentuated by his participation in seminars at the Calculus Center of the Complutense University of Madrid, which introduced him to working with computers.
His first exhibition was ‘Formas Computables’, in 1969. He obtained the Ibizagràfic Prize 72 and 76. He was awarded in 72 with the ‘BG Salvi’ prize and the ‘Europe Prize’ Ancona, Italy and a grant from the Juan March Foundation in 1974 for the stay as a Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Yturralde has developed a type of art close to science, such as his famous Impossible Figures. He introduced cybernetic art in Spain, also carrying out laser and holographic works. He is also the creator of Flying Structures, three-dimensional works capable of flying with which he participated in the 38th Venice Biennale, held in 1978 under the title ‘From Nature to Art and from Art to Nature’.
In the eighties, after delving into the kinetic direction with his ‘flying structures’, he returned to the plane with an attitude that, while still being constructively rigorous, is more poetic, due to the interrelation of colors and the instability of the compositions .
He is invited to participate in the Toyama Now International Triennial in 1990, Japan. Mural and Sculpture Contest Award for the Valencia Metro, 1995. In his most recent works, he has focused on the study of color and its influence on emotions and mood.
