A world champion marks the rhythm in Gran Canaria Orienteering Meeting (G-COM 2018). Johan Runesson, gold in junior category in medium and long distance (Goteborg, 2008), broke the clock on Wednesday night. The Swede was the fastest (12:38), among the nearly 300 participants who took the start in the first stage of the test, of 1.9 kilometers, on the route that ran through some of the most emblematic corners of La Village of San Nicolás: the beach, the adjoining streets and the surroundings of the La Marciaga wetland.

In the wake of Runesson, in the premier category (M21), were placed Scottish Scott Fraser (at 50 seconds) and the Finnish Arttu Syrjäläinen, which used one minute and four seconds more than the Swede. Lauri Syrjäläinen and Otto Sund completed the first five positions of a classification in which the best national runner was David Pérez Talavera, of the OrientaGC Sports Club.

In F21, the fastest in completing the 1.8 kilometer stretch was the Lithuanian Ausrine Kutkaite: from the start to the finish, after passing through all the corresponding markers, it used 13:37 minutes. Finnish runners completed the podium of the first stage: Elina Lamni (13:40) and Janina Donner (13:52)

In categories M35 and F35, the fastest in completing the challenge posed by the organization were the French Olivier Guignard (14:42) and the British Tereza Maria Rush (19:03), while in M18 and F18 the runners with the best results were Finnish Jonny Donner (12:55) and the Danish Alberte Thyssen (15:47)

At about 20 degrees of temperature -Detail highlighted by participants from Europe-, G-COM 2018 started with an "entertaining and technical" race, according to the majority of the runners. The runners will have to face an average gap, within a circuit of urban land, without traffic restriction. The calendar of the test also presents two more proposals: an explanatory talk on the modality Trail-O (15.30 hours) and one career of Trail-O in the South Park of Maspalomas.

The competition system of the G-COM 2018 is the usual one of the orientation tests: the runners come out one by one with the aim of marking with their tweezers (chip) the indicated beacons at Map of the stage, each one will be able to choose the path that they consider most optimal and the winner will be the one who spends the least amount of time in completing the exercise - exit, markers and goal.

In this edition, the G-COM It has a radio beacon that emits the results in an intermediate point of the route, which allows the spectators to have an intermediate classification from the finish area, offers updated maps and admits inscriptions on-site for those who come to our sport they can try immediately.

The more 350 registered for the G-COM 2018 will compete distributed in 21 different categories. Among adults, the levels differ by age ( M / F21, M / F35, M / F45, M / F55, M / F65 and M / F75 +) and sex, while among the youngest there is no distinction between boys and girls (10, 12, 14 and 16). In addition, the categories of the O-CUP Gran Canaria in the tests that score for this competition on days 26 (night) and 30 (city sprint).

The first three classified in each category will receive trophies and awards - will be established from the sum of the middle distance race, the long run and the urban sprint; the rest of the tests are considered open and will not have prizes.

The G-COM 2018 is organized by Orientación Canarias (by Canary Limonium) and has the Island Sports Institute - European Sports Island and the Gran Canaria Tourist Board as main sponsors. The municipalities of La Aldea, Artenara and Mogán also appear as sponsors of a test that has the massage school Begoña Ferrero, Gofio La Piña, Tirma, Coca Cola-Aquabona and Gofio Buenlugar as collaborators
