Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake dies at 84

Well-known Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake passed away last Friday at the age of 84 due to liver cancer.

Miyake, who created garments that combined traditional Japanese fashion with avant-garde materials and cuts, was born in April 1938 in Hiroshima and trained in graphic design in Tokyo.

After graduating, she worked in New York and Paris, later returning to the Japanese capital to found Miyake Design Studio, a producer of high-end womenswear.

Miyake is known for the use of pleats in his garments, for his simple turtleneck sweaters like those popularized by Steve Jobs or for his line of Bao Bao bags with geometric patterns, among many other creations.
