"It's a very old thread"

The PP of Alberto Núñez Feijóo marks distances with the PP of his predecessor in office and declared reference, Mariano Rajoy. The publication this Monday of some conversations between the former general secretary and the former commissioner José Manuel Villarejo in which the former number two of the party claims the former police help stop investigations about the papers of the former national treasurer of the formation, Luis Bárcenas. For the general coordinator of the PP, Elías Bendodo, the audios offered by El País are part of a kind of conspiracy against his party. “It is a very old topic, it appears or disappears depending on the interest of the person who moves it”, he has said in statements to Antena 3.

Bendodo, number three of the PP of Feijóo, has been interviewed in the Public Mirror program presented by Susanna Griso. The communicator has asked him about it, expressly pointing out that the information is published in the "pre-campaign" of the elections in Andalusia on June 19. "It is very timely," agreed Bendodo, Juan Manuel Moreno's right-hand man in the Andalusian Government.

The general coordinator recalled that he has been in his organic position for “a little over a month”, for which he was appointed by Feijóo on April 3. And he has continued: “This is a very old topic, it appears or disappears depending on the interest of those who move it”. Immediately, he has barricaded himself behind the corruption cases of the PSOE in Andalusia. On May 4, Cospedal attended as a guest an informative act of Feijóo organized by the medium El Debate.

That's as far as the PP's response to the verification of Cospedal's maneuvers to save the PP leadership from the police investigations that were initiated on account of the so-called Gürtel case. Bárcenas registered a parallel accounting in the party that was supplied with contributions from hidden businessmen both to the Court of Auditors and to the Treasury. According to the notes of the former treasurer, part of that money was used to pay for the works of the party's national headquarters, the building at number 13 on Calle de Génova in Madrid. But also to salaries in black money that were delivered to former president Mariano Rajoy or to those who were general secretaries and deputy general secretaries during that time, such as Javier Arenas, Rodrigo Rato, Jaime Mayor Oreja, Ángel Acebes, Francisco Álvarez Cascos and Cospedal herself, as as El País recalls.

The Gürtel case and its derivatives spelled the end of Mariano Rajoy. The motion of censure that ended his government came just after the sentence of the National High Court that proved, among other elements, that the PP profited from the corruption plot. That was in 2018 and the Supreme Court confirmed. Since then, up to three court rulings have determined that the party that Feijóo leads today profited from corruption money of the Gurtel.

Irene Montero: “It is not a matter of the past”

The first reaction of the coalition government to the audios published this Monday has come from the Minister for Equality, Irene Montero, who recalled that "one of the elements of the motion of censure to remove Mariano Rajoy from La Moncloa had to do with corruption as a form of government.

"And that is a central element of the political debate now, because it is not a question of the past," said the leader of Podemos in a interview on Cadena SERin which he recalled the alleged irregularities in mask contracts of the brother of the president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and the case of the commission agents in the Madrid City Council.

“What the governments of the right and the extreme right imply supposes a democratic involution (...). Corruption as a form of government is to use everyone's money for the benefit of your friends instead of to improve people's lives”, Montero has settled.

The deputy general secretary of the PSOE, Adriana Lastra, has accused the PP of corrupting the institutions "to cover up their corruption." “This is the PP. Specialists in corrupting State institutions, starting with the Ministry of the Interior to cover up their corruption", Lastra wrote on his Twitter profile, in which he has inserted a previous message from the PSOE account in which the party wonders what The current president of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, will give his opinion.

According to the socialist formation, the Cospedal audios “confirm the maneuvers and dirty play of the PP to try to cover up its corruption. "The PP of Aznar, of M. Rajoy, of Casado and of Feijóo is the same as always", they consider.
