The jury of the National Essay Prize has proposed Irene Vallejo to be awarded the National Prize for Literature in its Essay modality, corresponding to 2020, for her work The infinity in a reed. The invention of books in the ancient world (Editorial Siruela). The award, awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, is endowed with 20,000 euros.
Olga Novo wins the 2020 National Poetry Prize
The jury has chosen this work “because it offers a personal, scholarly and instructive journey through the history of the book and of culture in the ancient world, which conveys a feeling of collectivity in which both the author herself and the person reading it recognize each other. ”
“From a magnificent narrative capacity, the author combines rigor and historical sense in the content with an extraordinary taste for writing, and projects a fresh look that goes beyond the essay and incorporates elements from other genres, adding new readers to a type of literature whose audience grows day by day. ”
Irene Vallejo studied Classical Philology and obtained a European Doctorate from the universities of Zaragoza and Florence. At present he carries out an intense work of dissemination of the classical world by giving conferences and courses. Collaborate with the newspaper Herald of Aragon and with The weekly country. From his literary work the novels stand out The buried light (2011) and The archer’s whistle (2015). He has published children’s books and essays. The anthologies Someone talked about us (2017) and The future remembered (2020) collect their newspaper articles.
