Iran defies US pressures with new advances in the nuclear field

The Iranian authorities this week presented more than a hundred achievements in the field of nuclear technology reached during the past year, which was complicated by the unilateral withdrawal of the US from the aforementioned agreement and its reimposition of sanctions against Iran.

If in 1983, on the occasion of the National Day of Nuclear Technology, 83 achievements were announced, this year the Atomic Energy Agency of Iran (AEAI) surpassed and announced 114, while the installation of advanced centrifuges of the IR-type began. 6

"The US policy of harassment can not hinder our progress in the field of nuclear technology," the head of the AEAI, Ali Akbar Salehi, said at a ceremony.

The main Iranian advances were a control system to monitor nuclear processes, two radiomedicines, including the Yttrium-90 material, used for the treatment of cancer, a linear medical accelerator, and achievements in the area of ​​quantum physics and production. of oxygen-18.

As for oxygen-18, Salehi's chief advisor, Ali Asghar Zarean, explained to Efe that it took four years of research to achieve the final product and be able to offer it to interested companies.

"The production capacity is 100 kilograms a year, and in this first phase we are producing 50, but our annual consumption is a few kilograms, so we are going to export it," he said.

They are also willing to export centrifuges. According to Zarean, the AEAI has managed to design and manufacture locally "any type of centrifuge", which are used in different industries, including the medical sector, and whose internal development was necessary because foreign companies did not sell them to Iran.

In fact, this week a chain of 20 advanced IR-6 centrifuges was installed at the Natanz nuclear power plant, each of which, according to the expert, is equivalent to eight of the IR-1 design.

On this progress, the Iranian president, Hasan Rohaní, issued a warning to the USA: "If you were afraid in the past of our IR-1 centrifuges, you should know that today we launch a chain of 20 IR-6 and that, if you keep the pressure , we will reveal a chain of IR-8 centrifuges in the near future. "

Iran's use of the IR-8 is prohibited under the 2015 nuclear agreement, which limits Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against the Persian country.

That pact was signed between Iran and the so-called Group 5 + 1 (USA, Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany), but Washington's exit from it and its re-imposition of sanctions has shaken the agreement.

The US denounces that the agreement only delays the acquisition by Iran of the atomic bomb, although the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has certified 14 times that Iran is fulfilling its commitments.

The pact dismantled or modeled some atomic facilities in Iran and temporarily restricts Tehran's investigations with nuclear material and technology, such as uranium enrichment, limited to less than 4% purification, between 10 and 25 years.

Salehi said this week that all new achievements are in accordance with IAEA guidelines and that fears about the Iranian nuclear program are "unfounded."

In the same vein, his adviser assured Efe that all of Iran's nuclear activities are "peaceful" and that they have not "developed anything beyond the limits of international standards."

However, Zarean, as Salehi did in the past, indicated that if the Iranian authorities consider that the rest of the signatories of the 2015 pact do not fulfill their commitments, the atomic program will be resumed.

"Know that we will return in a determined and better way than before," he warned.
