The province and city of Burgos will have a very special reason to celebrate the July 20, 2021: The Gothic cathedral of the Burgos capital will be 800 years old since the beginning of its construction. This temple, driven by the king Ferdinand III the Holy and Bishop Don Mauricio, happens to be one of the gothic works in Spain – comparable to the Notre-Dame de Paris, for many – and declared World Heritage by Unesco in 1984. The Centenary has brought together the Provincial Council, Bishopric, City Hall, Chamber of Commerce of Burgos and numerous companies in the Foundation VIII Centenary of the Cathedral. Burgos 2021. In the words of its general director, Piluca Gil, the objective is that this event «Change the city and value all wealth that has the capital and the province: that everything Burgos has under the umbrella of the cathedral is known ».
It seeks to claim other points of attraction for visitors and pilgrims such as the Santiago's road -which passes through the city of Burgos-, the prehistoric sites of the Sierra de Atapuerca that were declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2000, the Camino del Cid or the natural environment of the Geopark Las Loras.
For Gil it is not "a punctual event" but "a driving engine" that encourages the arrival of more tourists year after year "in the wake of this Centenary." In this regard, the goal of exceeding one million visitors to the Cathedral at the end of 2021 is set. The Foundation hopes to conclude this year above the 500,000 tourists. For the professor of the Department of Applied Economics and responsible for the "Tourism Observatory of the Province of Burgos, origin and destination" of the University of Burgos (UBU), Pablo Arranz, whatever exceed half a million visitors and reaching 800,000 tourists would be "a resounding success".
But what tools are available? From the Foundation, born in spring last year, remember that in mid-2020 the Jubilee Year granted by the Vatican and, in 2021, the Gothic temple will host a new edition of «The Ages of Man», which attracts about 200,000 visitors. For the preparation of all these events and the organization of other cultural activities (exhibitions, concerts …), the Foundation had a budget of 380,000 euros in 2018.
This year will close the year with an endowment of 1,157,000 euros, 56% of private contributions (600,000 euros) and the rest from public institutions. In addition, it has already signed collaboration agreements with multinationals such as Telefonica and Mapfre; local companies such as Grupo Antolín or firms such as Mutua Madrileña, Ibercaja and La Caixa, through their Social Work. Soon it will sign similar agreements with Pascual, Liberbank or the ACS Foundation.
«Fix» the tourist
The objective is none other than to prop up upward tourism since 2013, and the one that last year closed in 1.473.962 visitors, according to the Bulletin of Statistical Conjuncture of Castilla y León. With a strong presence of national tourism, 70% compared to 30% of international visitors, very focused on the summer, and representing up to 11% of total employment. In Pablo Arranz's opinion, the key is to "fix tourism" that visits the Castilian-Leonese province. Specifically, «lengthen» the average stay of tourists from 1.55 days to 1.65 days, since it is «the lowest in Spain».
To do this, Arranz proposes «take advantage of the tractor moment of the Centenary to promote the region ”, through what it calls“ integrated packages ”with visits to heritage along with activities such as concerts or exhibitions. In the opinion of the head of the Tourism Observatory of the University of Burgos, the best way is to take advantage of «Synergies with private companies», especially the most internationalized.
