Huawei gets smarter than Samsung and Apple with its Mate 20 Pro | Technology

Huawei Not only does he want to rub shoulders with the big-Apple and Samsung-he's willing to outdo them in the leadership of smart mobiles. With its new models Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro it is remarkably close to that the top, both in features and price. Its new flagship has the most powerful processor on the market (Kirin 980), a Leica triple camera that allows taking microscopic photographs (at a distance of 2.5 centimeters), and novelties such as a reverse wireless charging system that turns the mobile into charger for other devices, the fingerprint reader integrated in the screen or a proprietary nanoSD memory card format to expand the external storage of the mobile.

In a first impression, the new Huawei Mate 20 Pro, presented today in London, is both in features and design much more novel and daring than the latest releases of its competitors, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the iPhone XS and XR or the Google Pixel 3, and represents a qualitative leap for the Chinese brand when it comes to setting the level of its high-end smartphones. It is not surprising that the price also escalates. The Mate 20 Pro costs 1,080 euros and the Mate 799 euros

The first thing that catches the attention of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is its wide screen of 6.39 inches OLED QHD + (1440×3120 pixels) and rounded edges, with a tiny tab (notch) which houses the front camera for 24 megapixel selfies (24 MP) and the vertical surface emission laser module (VSEL) for facial recognition, thanks to the creation of a 3D infrared face map similar to the one worn by the last ones iPhone

Triple camera

The back part breaks with the traditional design of placing the cameras aligned vertically or horizontally and concentrates them in a square next to the flash. It consists of three 40-megapixel (MP), 20MP and 8MP Leica lenses. The 40MP main sensor has an aperture of f / 1.8 and Light Fusion technology for quality photographs even in low light conditions. The secondary sensor of 20MP is a telephoto lens with an aperture of f / 2.4. The third camera of 8MP is a wide angle that, together with the optical zoom of 5X, will allow a new "supermacro" mode to take pictures of objects or images at a distance of 2.5 centimeters.

As is already the norm of the house, cameras are not silly glasses. Thanks to artificial intelligence, two neural processing units (NPU) are incorporated to optimize the images and edit them, according to the light conditions or the type of photo that you want to make.

None of this would be possible if the Mate 20 did not have heart and lungs The new Kirin 980 superprocessor, the first silicon chip of 7 nanometers and eight cores, used in an Android phone. Thanks to it, the phone increases its performance by 20% and battery efficiency by 40% compared to its predecessor, which equips the Huawei P20 and Mate 10 and its Pro versions.

The battery is not far behind. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes equipped with the most powerful of the market of 4.200 mAh (200 mAh less in the version of the Mate 20) and fast charging system, which allows to fill 70% of the battery in half an hour. However, the main novelty in this regard will be the new Huawei smartphone that allows reverse wireless charging. That is, the phone becomes a charger simply by turning it over and placing another compatible device (headset, smartwacth or another mobile) on its back.

New memory card

Another exclusive of the Mate presented today in the British capital is the nanoSD memory card, its own format and the size of a nano SIM, which replaces the microSD memories. The advantage with respect to the latter is that they are much faster and the disadvantage is that, since they are not standard, they are much more expensive. Thanks to them, the storage expansion is allowed up to 256GB.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro brings 6GB of RAM (4GB Mate 20), and internal memory of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. The software is supported by the operating system Android 9.0 EMUI 9.0.

This new high-end smartphone, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, will come in configurations of 6 and 8 GB of RAM, and options of 128, 256 and 512 GB of internal storage. Inside, the HiSilicon Kirin 980 own brand, a chipset with octacore CPU and 7 nm that must face the Apple A12 and, for now, Snapdragon 845 Qualcomm. All this without giving up Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9.0, IP68 water resistance and a battery capacity of 4200 mAh.
