Hemodonation urges the population to donate blood before the Christmas holidays

The Canary Institute of Hemodonation and Hemotherapy (ICHH), dependent on the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, reminds the population of the importance of donating blood before the Christmas holidays to guarantee the stock of the Canarian Transfusion Center and to cover the needs of blood products in hospitals in the Archipelago.

At this time, as is usually the case during holiday periods, the number of blood donations drops significantly due to the travel of regular donors, changes in their routines, celebrations, etc. For this reason, the ICHH insists on the need to plan donations in advance, taking into account that hospital activity at this time is maintained and in some cases increases due to emergencies.

The ICHH recalls that in the Canary Islands 300 daily donations are needed to meet the needs of hospital centers and that is why it is necessary to maintain a constant number of donations throughout the year, preferably every 3 or 4 months, also at Christmas.

To facilitate access to the donation during the next week, the ICHH has arranged temporary extraction rooms in the municipalities of Tuineje, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Gáldar, Agaete, Telde, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Candelaria and La Orotava, in addition to the fixed points available throughout the Archipelago.

Donation requirements and protocols

To be a blood donor, you must be between 18 and 65 years old, in good general health, weigh more than 50 kg and, in the case of women, not be pregnant. At this time, in addition, specific requirements related to the protection protocol against COVID-19 must be met, which are: not presenting cough or respiratory symptoms, not having been diagnosed or having been in contact with people affected by the COVID-19 and not having traveled outside the Canary Islands in the last 14 days.

To donate blood, you must make an appointment by calling 012 (922 470 012/928 301 012), option 8, Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. or by completing the form published on the website efectodonacion.com. Before going to donate, it is recommended to review the information published on this same web page in the Information and Protocol tabs, to familiarize yourself with the established security measures.

In the hospitals of the Canarian Transfusion Network you can donate without an appointment, although it is recommended to call the service in advance to guarantee the normal functioning of the blood banks. The ICHH advises donors of the importance of notifying them in the event that an unforeseen event arises that prevents them from attending a confirmed appointment, so that another person can occupy that position and thus guarantee the intended donation objective.
