The Ministry of Health has notified this Thursday 12,662 new infections of coronavirus and 126 deaths since yesterday. The cumulative incidence stands at 262.79, while yesterday it was 253.74 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Since the pandemic began, the number of infected has risen to 1,854,951 and the number of deaths to 49,824. The new infections are distributed as follows: 2,770 in Madrid, 2,690 in Catalonia, 2,494 in the Valencian Community, 1,091 in Andalusia, 756 Castilla-La Mancha.
The arrival of vaccines continues to focus national news. Today we have learned that the vaccination campaign in Catalonia will begin on December 27, the same day that it starts in the rest of Spain, starting with users and residential workers. The first to receive doses of Pfizer / BioNTech will be the Feixa Llarga Assisted Residence, in l’Hospitalet de Llobregat.
Meanwhile, the incidence of the coronavirus has shot up in the heart of Madrid. The Basic Health Zone (ZBS) of Cortes, which includes the Letras neighborhood, Puerta del Sol, Preciados street and all the blocks that surround Gran Vía, accumulates dozens of positives in the last two weeks. So many that the rate of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants has risen to 443 and today it is among the areas of the region where the pandemic is hitting the hardest.
Mutations of the virus constitute another of the main concerns of the next few hours. The new variant of SARS-CoV-2 found in the UK has put in check the global strategy in the face of the first winter of the pandemic. The only thing that is known at the moment is that this mutation of the virus that causes COVID-19 is transmitted 70% faster, which has caused a cascade of measures such as the closing of some air borders with the United Kingdom –Among which is not Spain, which has only limited flights– and increased restrictions in the British Isles.
