he does not remember his wedding, nor does his partner smoke

It confuses the date of the wedding, does not remember the name of the brothers of its pair, nor its scars, it does not know its likings and it does not know what tobacco it smokes. The administration rejects dozens of suspicious marriages between Spaniards and foreigners every month after interviewing the contracting parties.

The General Directorate of Registries and Notaries has reviewed so far this year 283 files appealed by couples who were not allowed to register their wedding held abroad or who did not obtain authorization to marry upon finding "objective data" point to "the absence of marital consent".

About 90% of the resources, point to Efe sources of the general direction, are dismissed, although there are cases in which it is found that the interview has thrown only superficial data and calls for its repetition.

A review of the last monthly bulletin of this organization shows more than fifty resolutions in which cases that are understood to be "simulated marriages" are rejected, with which it is sought, basically, to accelerate the acquisition of Spanish nationality, obtain a permit from residence or achieve family reunification.

In 2015, the general management resolved 926 appeals against decisions of the Civil Registry; in 2016, 784; in 2017, 725; and last year, 529. After the dismissals, the judicial process remains open.

The growth of this phenomenon was alerted in a 2006 instruction, which emphasized the importance of the personal interview, reserved and separately with the members of the couple to detect if there are "objective facts" that point to a marriage of convenience .

Disregarding the couple's basic personal or family information and that they have not had a prior relationship are objective facts, according to the instruction, which emphasizes nevertheless that, in order to deny an enrollment, the official must have "full moral certainty" that It is a simulated marriage, and not just doubts or clues.

Each resolution denies a range of signals, such as a Spanish and a Brazilian who met online and that, a few weeks after arriving in Spain with a return visa, they decided to start their marriage file. They did not provide proof of their relationship and in their interviews they gave contradictory data about each other's families.

As happened to Andie MacDowell and Gérard Depardieu in the movie "Marriage of convenience", they got lost in the details: he declares that the last gift he has given him is a ring when he was asked to marry at a surprise dinner and an orchid, while that she says she gave him a bracelet at the flea market; She says he drinks half-skimmed milk, but he says they buy whole milk.

There are strong summaries: "They do not agree on the gifts that have been made, what he has for breakfast, what they did last weekend, where his partner celebrated his birthday, etc. On the other hand, the interested party is in prison for mistreatment . "

And striking situations: "Neither of you knows the reason why the other is in jail."

The nationalities of the couples are diverse and, in many cases, in the denials it is clear that the interview was done with an interpreter and that they do not have a common language, a fact that the Council of the EU points out as a factor that allows us to presume the existence of a " marriage of complacency. "

Many are constituted in exchange for money, as last May revealed the Civil Guard to dismantle in the Valencian Community an organization dedicated to attract "brides" Spanish and Romanian to marry non-community males, mainly Indians.

They paid up to 17,000 euros per link and they received about 1,000.

In its last published annual report, corresponding to 2017, the State Attorney General's Office also warned of this phenomenon: "Only with exhaustive police investigation work is it possible to successfully promote the nullity of marriages contracted artificially for the sole purpose of obtaining advantages administrative ".

Of the 163,430 marriages registered last year in Spain, 23,092 had a foreign spouse, according to data from the National Statistics Institution.
