Two years later, the CIS has again asked about the disposition of the Spanish population towards the legalization of the sale of marijuana in certain establishments and also for therapeutic use. Half of the population (49.7%) is already in favor of a regulated sale and under certain conditions. This is three points more than in 2018. Against the legalization for this use, there is 40.9% of the population.
Six responses from the Government, six versions: obscurantism envelops the cannabis market in Spain
The predisposition towards the legalization of therapeutic use has also taken a good leap, reaching a convincing 90%, six points more than the last time an opinion was requested on this aspect. Against, there is only 4.6%.
This data increases even more the gap between the social majority in favor of regulation and politics. United We Can is developing a bill for the comprehensive consumption – for both recreational and therapeutic use – of cannabis to present in the second half of the legislature. But the map of support is not clear and the other member of the coalition government, the PSOE, has already aroused suspicion among users of cannabis for medicinal purposes by declaring last November that “the level of available evidence is not sufficient” . Podemos did not consider this posture as an immovable obstacle but as “A starting point”.
Patients with incessant pain have waited years for this regulation. “There are ten million people with chronic pain, three of them with neuropathic pain. 70% of patients do not find any solution. Let us at least this be an option“, asked Carola Pérez, president of the Spanish Observatory of Medicinal Cannabis, one of the most visible names in the fight for regularization for therapeutic use.
