This Friday will be March 8, International Women's Day. In Germany, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria it was celebrated for the first time on March 19, 1911, but it was more than 50 years later when the United Nations institutionalized it, in 1975. This year, as in 2018, the feminist collectives have called the mobilization and the strike.
In Spain, which last year became the international center of the fight, one of the slogans to stop for 24 hours the next 8M is 1,000 reasons. The groups and women who participate in the Commission March 8 (Organizer of Women's Day) have developed an argument in which they include reasons for the strike with which they aspire to "subvert the world order and the heteropatriarchal, racist and neoliberal discourse". And it will not be just a labor strike, they also call for stopping consumption, care and education for 24 hours.
The unions will cover the general strike, a constitutional right that anyone can use, men and women. Although the feminist collectives appeal only to women and ask men to assume the tasks that women normally perform as support.
CC OO and UGT, the majority, request stoppages of two hours per shift; while, CGT, CNT and the Inter-Union Confederation opted for 24 hours. In any case, both the stoppages and the 24 hours will be covered.
As actions for Friday, the feminist collectives have called demonstrations in more than 500 cities and towns of Spain in the morning and in the afternoon.
In Madrid, the student demonstration will be at 12:00 from the Puerta del Sol; and in the afternoon, at 7:00 pm and from Atocha, the general will start until Plaza de España.
