Press conferences have been convened simultaneously in Washington, Brussels, Santiago de Chile, Shanghai, Tapiei and Tokyo, according to a statement from the National Science Foundation.

The project connects radio antennas around the world, creating a virtual telescope the size of Earth. The goal is to generate enough magnifying power to visualize the area around a black hole, especially its event horizon, the point beyond which nothing, not even light, can escape.

"This capacity would open a new window in the study of general relativity in the strong field regime, the processes of accumulation and exit at the edge of a black hole, the existence of event horizons and the fundamental physics of black holes" , exposes the EHT team in a project description.

"In the coming years, the international EHT team will organize observation campaigns to increase the resolution power and sensitivity, with the aim of focusing on black holes"added the team.

The EHT project focuses on the two supermassive black holes that have the largest horizons of apparent events, as seen from Earth: the one at the heart of our own Milky Way galaxy, known as Sagitarius A *, and that of the giant elliptical galaxy M87.
