Gran Canaria will be the first island to increase equality policies in aid for cinema. This has been reported by the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media (CIMA), after yesterday the bases of the call for subsidies for Audiovisual Projects of 2020 of the Ministry of Culture of the Gran Canaria Council.
The measure comes after several meetings of the entity with the Insular Government’s Minister of Culture, Guacimara Medina, in which he was asked to increase, within the evaluation criteria section, the specific points to promote gender equality. And it is that in previous editions the score was five points out of 100, so from CIMA they proposed to increase this value to 10, attending to the most powerful headquarters assigning them a higher score: director, production director and executive producer (three points ), screenwriter, composer and director of photography (two points), other team leaders (one point).
“We believe that this measure will work because it will mean an increase in the audiovisual production of women in creative and technical positions, such as directing, screenwriting, cinematography or composition of soundtracks, among others, increasing the low percentage of films made by women in Canary Islands “, indicated the delegate of CIMA in the Canary Islands, Alba González de Molina.
In addition, the new bases positively value scripts that dignify and empower female characters. CIMA has been working since 2006 to achieve changes in favor of equal opportunities between women and men.
