This weekend the Tenerife municipality of La Matanza hosted the celebration of the Canary Islands Judo Championship in the male and female categories for children and cadets, with a large influx of public and participants, which was around the 200 judokas arrived from all the Islands of the Archipelago.
On Friday, in the afternoon session, the women's competition took place and on the morning of Saturday the men's competition was held. The Champion trophy for islands, which is awarded by the score of their judokas in all categories, went to Gran Canaria, followed by Tenerife, and in third place La Palma.
Alejandro Doblado, technical director of the Canary Federation of Judo, said that "in the Canary Islands we are doing a great job and there were already several competitors qualified for the Spanish Championships without going through the Canary Islands Championships for their good work". Regarding the options to achieve victories at the national level, he commented that "we are in a great moment, already last year we got some medals but possibly this year we will increase them".
Fermín Torres, vice president of the Canarian Federation, was resounding, "in these championships is the future of this Olympic sport in the archipelago, we have some promises which we must take care of so that they reach those goals that excite us all," he said.
Regarding the participation, the vice president stressed that "it is good to see that we have achieved a lot of potential in islands such as La Palma, La Gomera or Lanzarote and that we see champions who are no longer just from Gran Canaria and Tenerife".
