"I had never done anything like it, so crazy, of course," says Gracia Querejeta (Madrid, 1962). "It had not even occurred to me, it's also the first time I've directed a script that is not mine." Wave of crimes It is the first time of many things for the filmmaker. Already on the line -second at the box office-, this comedy of entanglement with career wives, absent-minded ex-wife, children nerds, vampire lawyers and murders becomes a rarity in the career of the director of A passing station, Seven French billiard tables, Happy 140 and pride The last trip of Robert Rylands. And the jump is due to the originality of the proposal. "Everything they offered me," says Querejeta, "was too much like my material, which made it unattractive, and this story would never have occurred to me."
Querejeta had made black comedy in his short Cornelias, true. "But I never would have dared with characters so extreme, that we have reinvented in the shooting," he concedes. "The attractive thing is to take the bull by the horns and see what happens, I felt comfortable because Luis Marías [el guionista] It has given me total freedom. Now, we have to try harder with the story, since not only do I have to please myself, but also the scriptwriter. At least I have it in mind because I'm also a scriptwriter. "Another novelty in a Querejeta film: the production of a private television, since until now the filmmaker worked with public television, which only goes into the purchase of antenna rights "Now I have collaborated with producers who work very differently. The essence of the work has not changed, although the form does. I was not surprised either, because I directed television series. "The waitress interrupted the conversation with cafes and said hello to the filmmaker. Happy 140 Y 15 years and one day ".
The director liked that they thought of her for something so different. "I loved the proposal." Do you feel that maybe female characters are as strong, empowered as the main trio? [Maribel Verdú, Paula Echevarría y Juana Acosta]Could they be the reason for that choice? "Well, look, I do not take it out there, they're the ones who pull the plot, and they're pure foolish absurdities, so I do not consider them characteristic of female empowerment." Other topics do come closer to the Querejeta universe, such as family relationships. "Right, because even if it's a crazy comedy, deep down it goes through different tones, that goes right up to the drama," he sums up, and gives as an example the police inspector that Antonio Resines plays ".
And what would Querejeta do without Maribel Verdú? "Well, no one is essential, neither she for me, nor I for her, but we had a lot of fun working together." And Maribel had not played a role like that either. that we could only throw ourselves together into the abyss because if we rolled it with a handbrake, it would not work … We have to bet, and we did it for a tone that, certain, sometimes provokes shame. " In his next project – "which has cost me a lot to lift, as the industry is today" – will again have three women: in addition to the mentioned Verdú, Emma Suárez and Adriana Ozores. "We have needed three years to hatch the project," he says, and ends: "The life of directors today is complicated, especially when the story is small and personal."
