The Majorcan translator of the Nobel Prize Louise Glück, Ruth Miguel, on Monday showed his support for the Valencian publishing house Pre-Textos, in which he published his translation (signed in conjunction with Abraham Gragera) of the poetry book Averno by the American poet. The label will lose Glück’s publishing rights after the unilateral termination of the contract by the writer’s agent, the dreaded Andrew Wylie.
“It is not just that Pre-Textos has published this author for the first time in Spain and has put out book after book by Glück for many years [en concreto 14], nor is it just about how you have taken care of every detail of those books. We won’t talk about fairness or loyalty, because I suppose they don’t have much to do with this type of business and someone nicknamed ‘The Jackal’ [el agente de Glück] You will not care about these sappy little things that cannot be translated into numbers. I do not know if the author is aware of the situation. But you only need to see the number of pages that something that happens daily in other areas has filled and the outrage that has aroused“reflects the professor at the UIB.” Fortunately there are pockets where people care that things are done well, “she says.” Besides, right now I don’t think the public would like to buy a Glück collection of poems from a publishing house other than Pre-Textos. I hope the good guys win for once. ”
On the other hand, the writer and columnist of this newspaper José Carlos Llop, friend of the editor of Pre-Textos, Miguel Borrás, who is also joined by the work they do for the Juan March Cencillo Prize for Brief Novel (Llop is the president of the jury and Borrás the co-editor with the Bartolomé March Foundation, the entity that announces the award), wrote last Saturday in ‘The Objective’ about what happened with Glück: “Immediately other publishers have landed as Hermanos de la Costa, bag in hand to saber mode, in order to buy the rights to Glück’s poetry, snatching them from the small publishers who had opted for it when in the target language she was unknown. ”
Borrás attended EL DIARIO DE MALLORCA this Monday and confessed that he was beginning to have doubts about whether Glück was aware of what happened. “We sent you a letter ten days ago and we still haven’t gotten a reply. Today [ayer] it’s my birthday and I want to continue thinking that she does not know anything about the maneuvers of this mob. I say it with pain. “At the moment, a letter in support of Pre-Textos is circulating to which personalities from the cultural sector are adhering, including professors from the UIB.” I know that a professor from the Andrés Bello University is going to report these malpractice to the Swedish Academy “, relates the editor.
