Alejandro Giammattei became today the first candidate nominated to the presidency of Guatemala for the general elections of 2019.
Giammattei was proclaimed by the parties Vamos, together with the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce of Guatemala (CCG), Guillermo Castillo, as his running mate, during the national assembly held this Sunday by the party "Vamos".
The political group agglutinates, according to local media, former members of the National Unity of Hope (UNE), the Patriot (PP), Grand National Alliance (GANA), All and National Convergence Front (FCN-Nation), the latter that brought to power the current president, Jimmy Morales.
The UNE governed between 2008-2012 with Álvaro Colom, arrested and prosecuted for corruption, while the PP was in power between 2012-2015 with Otto Pérez Molina, also in prison and waiting to be prosecuted for corruption.
While the GANA governed Guatemala with businessman Oscar Berger between 2004-2008.
The national assembly is established in the Electoral Law and Political Parties of Guatemala as a requirement that parties must meet to participate in the 2019 general elections.
Giammattei, born on March 9, 1956, already participated as a presidential candidate in the 2007 elections with the GANA, in 2011 with the Social Action Center (CASA) and in 2015 with Fuerza.
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) plans to call a general election next January.
The elections will be held in June and the date will be announced by the TSE on the day of the call.
