Gaudí's project did not contemplate the stairway of the Sagrada Familia that threatens several homes | Catalonia

Neither the truce signed by the patronage of the Sagrada Familia and the Government of the Mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, stop the soap opera. The Neighborhood Association of the neighborhood revealed on Thursday the existence of a document of the Ministry of Culture, of 1975, which assures in a very categorical way that the architect Antoni Gaudí did not project the stairway or the temple access plaza down the street of Mallorca. According to the letter, it was a later contribution of disciples of the architect. The document would come to deny the maxim held by the board: that the original project envisaged this great avenue. That has been the reiterated thesis of the construction board to argue that they are limited to executing the project that Gaudí had devised. What supports that document could mean the pardon of the affected buildings, which add 1,200 flats and 3,000 neighbors, an affectation that later calculations reduced to two hundred homes.

The document is signed by the Commission of Historical and Artistic Heritage, which in 1975 depended on the Ministry of Education and Science, and responds to a request from the City Council, which asked if it should stop the building works of the Font del promoter Nunez and Navarro, as requested the Construction Board. The building in question is a block of houses located right in front of the facade of Glòria -actual- of the street of Mallorca that the real estate projected on those dates. The text of Patrimony affirms that the building would prevent "the construction of the stairs of access to the finished temple, according to pretends to realize them the Meeting." And in this respect it is necessary to warn. There is no project of Gaudí of such stairs nor of the set of the temple [...] It can not be argued, then, that the new building affects the work of Gaudí. "The second clarification is revealing:" The stairs mentioned were drawn by Gaudí's assistants, for the first time in 1906, 24 years after the temple began " The document, of only one folio, adds: "Since 1925 its realization is impeded by urban planning. Gaudí lived when the City Council decided and made public not to take them into account in such planning. "The conclusion of the file is that" the new building project can be authorized. "And the works, which were initially submitted for the construction of a parking lot, they continued.

The Association of Neighbors of the Sagrada Familia understands that this document "belies the affirmation of the patronage", which maintains that the stairs were already in the original project. The president of the entity, Joan Itxaso affirms that the neighbors are in favor of finishing the works, "but respecting the alignment of the temple on the sidewalks of the block between the streets of Mallorca, Sardenya, Provença and Marina, Itxaso also claims that the affectation that weighs on the buildings threatened with demolition is lifted. "We can not do town planning according to the temple," he laments.

Both the City Council and the Temple have responded evasively to the neighborhood revelation. Just a month ago they agreed to regularize the works after 133 years of work without a license and this Thursday they answered that they are in it right now, in writing an urban plan that covers the license. And that any aspect that comes out of the already built will be discussed in the future in a Commission. A "commission to open the debate with the board of trustees, neighbors and neighboring entities," the City Council responded. "It will be done without apriorisms, putting all options on the table and seeking maximum consensus," he added. For its part, from the Sagrada Familia did not want to enter into controversy: "The document presented by the neighbors refers to the second phase of work" and when it is reached, the Board of the temple construction "will be pronounced" , according spokespersons of the institution.

Those responsible for the construction of the temple recently asserted that they felt legitimized in executing Gaudí's project. In fact, they already addressed it in a work commission that organized the previous municipal mandate, of Xavier Trias, that gave air to the aspirations of those responsible for the Holy Family who, on the other hand, do not want to assume what an expropriation means: who is responsible for relocating the neighbors and assumes that cost.
