The platform Free Now, that until now was called MyTaxi, has asked for measures Tuesday that protect to the sector of the taxi drivers and that endow it with competitiveness, like a smaller rigidity in the labor schedules, to face the rivalry with the vehicles of rent with driver (VTC).
"There is a series of regulations that traditionally intended to protect taxis and that are not working," said the CEO of Free Now Spain, Jaime Rodríguez de Santiago, at the presentation in Madrid of the platform inherited from MyTaxi.
In statements to Efe, he added that taxis are at a disadvantage with the VTC because they can be cheaper -for example, on trips to the airport- and, in his opinion, do not maintain the rest regime to which taxi drivers are obliged. that prevents them from working more hours and days a week.
"I think that such measures and rigidities are taking place, not only in Madrid, not only in Spain, but in most of the countries," said Rodríguez de Santiago, who has assessed the regulation approved on April 9 by the regional government of Madrid that will allow several users to share a taxi service.
Free Now is a joint project of the German automobile manufacturers Daimler and BMW.
His plan is to add more mobility options in the future, such as, for example, the Hive scooters, which in the coming months will start their services in Portugal, Poland and Austria.
One of the novelties that Free Now has presented is the maximum price, which will be fixed once the user selects their journey and, in case the final rate is higher than that indicated by the application, the platform will assume the difference.
In addition, customers will have a 15% discount on all journeys, a benefit that will be maintained at least until the end of July.
The change from MyTaxi to Free Now, both for taxi drivers and customers, will be done through an update in the Play Store of Android (Google) and iOS (Apple), so it will not be necessary to install a new app.
For this transformation, the company will invest more than 10 million euros in an international brand campaign.
In 2018, Free Now, under the name of MyTaxi, had increased its business in Spain by 45.3% to over 6.8 million journeys.
The platform is present in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Valencia, Oviedo, Gijón, Mieres and Avilés.
