Former President of Argentina Carlos Menem (1989-1999), who will turn 90 next Thursday, was discharged from hospital on Monday after more than two weeks hospitalized with pneumonia, sources from his environment confirmed to Efe.
The former Peronist president and current senator for his native province of La Rioja, who suffers from diabetes and had cardiological problems in the past, was hospitalized on June 13 at the Argentine Institute of Diagnosis in Buenos Aires after presenting dry cough and breathing difficulties.
The tests he underwent confirmed a picture of pneumonia in his right lung, he was negative for coronavirus and he was admitted to intensive care, although he went to the plant several days later.
“I want to tell you, with all the joy of my soul, that thanks to God, my old man is recovering very well, if everything continues like this, tomorrow he will be transferred to a common room. Luis de la Fuente, Menem’s doctor and director of the Cardiology area of the Argentine Institute of Diagnosis, had indicated that, at the time of his hospitalization, the politician was complying at home in the Palermo neighborhood of Buenos Aires with the mandatory isolation that governed since March 20 in Argentina by COVID-19.
In recent years, in addition to serving as a senator, a position he acceded to in 2005 and revalidated in 2011 and 2017, Menem has faced various corruption charges in court for acts of his presidential mandate and has maintained a low media profile.
