Formentera has approved to regulate, for the second consecutive year, the entry of vehicles by boat during the months of July and August to this small island of 83.24 square kilometers and 12,000 residents, in order to continue “towards the path of sustainability” , highlighted the Consell de Formentera.
The regulation will be in force from July 1 to August 31, a period in which the maximum number of vehicles that circulate on the island daily will be 21,487, which represents a 4% reduction compared to 2019, when the roof maximum stood at 22,382 vehicles per day.
After listening to the various entities of the island, the Consell de Formentera, the government of the island, has decided this week to maintain the deadline for the entry of vehicles to July and August, ruling out extending the restriction to the last week of June and the first of September.
For next summer, visitors who want to access Formentera with their own vehicle must pay 1 euro per day in the case of passenger cars, with a minimum payment of 5 euros, while the rate for motorcycles is 0.5 euros per day, with a minimum payment of 2.5 euros.
With this regulation, Formentera seeks to reduce in a “controlled and progressive” way the roof of vehicles by 16% in the next four years, until 2023, according to the Formentera.eco project.
In parallel, in order to reduce the number of vehicles on the road, the Consell plans to create new bike lane sections and will increase the taxi fleet by 17%, from 35 in 2019 to 41 in 2020.
Regarding public transport, the island administration will create a new line and increase frequencies with an 18% increase in service compared to the previous year, and free public transport will be implemented for young people under 18.
From the Consell de Formentera it is recalled that the implementation of the project has allowed “break the upward trend” of the increase in vehicles in circulation and reduce their number by 2%. Last summer, when this project was launched for the first time, the maximum authorized number was 21,929 vehicles per day.
In addition, in 2019 there was an 8% decrease in traffic on the roads of the island, a 1.6% increase in public transport users and a 29% increase in bicycle users compared to 2018.
As for reservations to obtain authorization to access with your own vehicle, they can be made from March on the web formentera.eco.
Until then, all accommodation or boat ticket reservations for vehicles will be guaranteed authorization to circulate.
