Five Chinese (and cheaper) alternatives to the iPhone 11 | Technology

Not so many years ago, Apple marked the path that almost all mobile phones followed. Chinese manufacturers, above all, copied their forms and their functions. Now, however, when the apple arrives, the terminals of the Asian giant are already there. Brands such as Huawei, OPPO or Xiaomi have pioneered the launch of 5G terminals, a band that the Californian multinational has not yet decided to climb despite the fact that the technology is ready and will become popular in the next two years, theoretically during the mobile life.

The iPhone continue to resist interesting innovations such as fingerprint sensors under the screen, and keep the enormous eyebrow that characterizes a design that has hardly changed since the launch of the iPhone X. Fortunately, to enjoy elements already as widespread in the market as fast charging, users of the Pro and Pro Max versions – even the denomination comes from Android devices – they will no longer have to purchase the charger on their own, something that they will have to continue doing iPhone 11 to dry. In any case, the 18W system falls short when compared to many competitors.

Apple resells the photograph as the main dish of the device, and includes three lenses with different focal lengths to offer a wider range of possibilities. But he is late. Very late. The OPPO Reno and the Huawei P30 Pro have been offering a similar combination of lenses for months and even go there with their periscopic cameras that reach a five-magnification optical zoom. In EL PAÍS we have tried several recently launched Chinese terminals that are good alternatives to the iPhone 11, especially those with the last name Pro. They all have one point in common: they are cheaper than Apple.

1. Nubia Z20

Apple offers three cameras, and Nubia too. But, in addition, the Shenzhen brand not only allows them to be used to take traditional photographs. Selfies can also be done with them. All thanks to the inclusion of a second 5.1-inch screen in the back. It is an element that favors two things: on the one hand, that self-portraits with the same quality can be captured – both in resolution and in brightness of the lenses – and possibilities – wide angle for groups, standard for individual portraits – than the rest of images ; and, on the other hand, that the mobile can dispense with the front camera to avoid the inclusion of a notch in the main panel of 6.42 inches, which looks very thin edges. To make matters worse, your main camera can record video in 8K resolution at 15 fps – and 4K at 60 fps, like the iPhone.

It is not the first time the rear screen is used. He opened the ban Meizu with the strange Pro 7 a couple of years ago, and Nubia took the witness with her previous model, the X. Now, perfect the system and improve the transition between screens with various methods to switch from one to another. In addition, the second is fully operational – it can be used as a substitute for the main one to save battery power – and also serves to always have the clock activated and receive notifications, or to personalize it with a screensaver in motion or a GIF created by the user himself. Without a doubt, it is a phone that attracts attention.

Finally, the Nubia Z20 does not focus solely on the camera. It includes the most powerful Qualcomm chip – the Snapdragon 855 + – and is accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of internal storage. Complete the package with DTS sound, Bluetooth 5.0, a fingerprint sensor on each side, and fast charging of 27W. Among the shortcomings, the lack of water resistance and wireless charging stand out. Although the brand has not yet announced its official price, you can already book on the official page of Nubia in Spain and everything indicates that it will cost about 600 euros or less.

2. OPPO Reno 2

OPPO, which pronounced in English sounds very similar to Apple, has always been characterized by risking its designs. Not surprisingly, in 2013 it became the first brand that introduced a rotating camera to allow its use also in the ‘selfis’, which were then characterized by their terrible quality. Photography has always been one of its strengths, and with Reno 2 it goes one step further: if the US company offers three main cameras, Shenzhen's commitment to four. And they don't even stand out from the elegant crystal body.

To the combination of wide angle, standard lens, and zoom adds a fourth monochrome sensor that allows you to collect more information to create a very accurate retrato portrait mode ’. The terminal also adopts the peculiar camera ‘selfi’ of its predecessor, the OPPO Reno, which is shaped like a shark fin and uses a motorized system to extend and retract in a fraction of a second. In addition, the Reno 2 is equipped with the fingerprint sensor under the fastest and most effective screen on the market, which allows the brand to take advantage of the entire front, in which there is neither notch nor just edges. The 6.4-inch screen is protected by the latest generation of Gorilla Glass.

The Oppo Reno 2 has four objectives, which do not even protrude from the glass body.

Of course, in the second generation of the Reno OPPO series has opted for a processor that is a step below the mobile that precedes it and assembles a Snapdragon 730. It is accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. It is appreciated that you keep the 3.5 mm jack jack for headphones, your dedicated microphone with noise cancellation, and that it includes both NFC and an element in danger of extinction, the FM radio. Unfortunately, it is neither waterproof nor has wireless charging. It is not yet for sale in Europe, but the previous version can be purchased in different chains of department stores from 499 euros.

3. Asus Zenfone 6

Taiwanese manufacturer Asus, better known for his computers, has long been trying to make his way in the saturated mobile phone market. So far he has not had much luck, but his latest model, the Zenfone 6, it attracts attention both for its power – it is also equipped with the Snapdragon 855 and up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory expandable up to 1 TB with a MicroSD card – as for its bold design, and can fill the void that has left HTC with its decline.

Having tried to win the favor of the public in the mid-range, Asus bursts into the flagships with a smartphone which also appeals to the interest of users for 'selfi' photography with a system reminiscent of that of OPPO N1 and N3: they call it Flip Camera and it consists of a motorized mechanism that lifts the module of the main double camera – equipped with a Generous wide-angle and a standard lens paired with a 48-megapixel Sony sensor, four times the resolution of the iPhone- to flip it and allow the user to use it for portraying. It works surprisingly well: it's fast, it gives the mobile a fun look with two robotic eyes reminiscent of Wall-e, and gives more space to a screen without notches.

The Gorilla Glass 6 glass finish gives it an air premium, and the Zenfone 6 includes some interesting features: the physical button of rápida quick action ’can be configured to perform any action that the user determines, such as opening the camera or taking a screenshot, the battery is especially generous -5,000 mAh. with fast QC4 charging and the ability to charge other devices as if it were an external battery-, and does not abandon the headphone jack – moreover, it includes decent ones in the box – or the FM radio. Among the weaknesses are the lack of water resistance and wireless charging, as well as the location of the fingerprint sensor in the rear. The Zenfone 6 is now available through portals such as Gearbest from 545 euros.

4. OnePlus 7 Pro

OnePlus was born with the label of ‘iPhone killer’ (iPhone killer) and so on. However, the little sister of the BBK conglomerate – which also includes OPPO and Vivo – has been increasing its price to substantially cut the difference that separated it from Apple devices. Of course, it has also increased its benefits proportionally: the OnePlus 7 Pro It is resistant to splashes – although the company has not certified it -, it has a curved screen as Samsung's most advanced devices, a panel with a refresh rate of 90Hz, QHD + resolution and 6.67 inches, and Get in the car of the self-powered cameras to offer a real 'all screen' mobile.

It also incorporates the trident of objectives that Apple now copies: a wide angle to capture a large field of vision, a standard lens with a 48 megapixel sensor, and a 3x optical zoom that can be stretched up to 10X digitally. The last two lenses have an optical stabilizer that performs a great job, because as the zoom increases, so do the vibrations of an unstable pulse. To all this we must add a magnificent mode ‘night landscape’ that combines different shots to create a well-defined image with lots of light even when lighting is scarce.

As if that were not enough, OnePlus incorporates up to 12 GB of RAM, triple the amount of Apple's devices, the Snapdragon 855 chip, a 30W fast charge for its 4,000 mAh battery, liquid cooling system to prevent the terminal overheats during games, and an acceptable stereo sound. Finally, its operating system is the closest to pure Android, ideal for those looking for something simple. The OnePlus 7 Pro can be purchased on the official website of the brand in Spain from 709 euros.

5. Huawei P30 Pro

It's been a difficult year for Huawei, the second largest mobile seller in the world, due to the war that Donald Trump has declared. However, although it is in the air that it can use American technology again, the brand ensures that terminals that are already on the market will not stop receiving any of the Android updates, and that applications that can not be preinstalled can be added easily manually. That supposes that the P30 Pro, your flagship, should not be affected by the battle that the two great world powers are fighting for global hegemony.

And the P30 Pro is a great device. If it appears in the last place of this list it is only for its value for money, the most similar to that of the new Apple phones. In fact, it stays close to the psychological barrier of a thousand euros, although the turbulence in the company has caused many sellers to have lowered their price considerably. Thus, it is now possible to find it for less than 700 euros in different establishments – both physical and online, an amount that makes it very competitive.

After all, although OPPO presented it before, Huawei was a pioneer with this model in the commercialization of periscopic cameras that use a mirror system to achieve a 5X optical zoom that can be multiplied by ten digitally. Its Leica lenses are among the best and, without a doubt, the P30 Pro has taken mobile photography a step further. In addition, it has a fast charge of 40W, which is also wireless and reverse, which means that the mobile can charge another wireless device. Finally, its Kirin 980 chip has performance and speed similar to those of Snapdragon 855 and Apple's new A13 Bionic.
