The coronavirus pandemic could give an unexpected new opportunity to Sniace, specialized in the production of cellulose and viscose fiber, with sanitary applications (from it you can manufacture masks or gowns to protect health personnel against Covid-19) and that last February 13 requested its voluntary liquidation, leaving 400 employees without a future. A step that the management of the chemical group blamed on the decree on cogeneration of the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
In this context, a group of minority shareholders sent a few days ago an open letter to the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, and that of Cantabria, Miguel Ángel Revilla, in which they requested the reopening of their factory in Torrelavega (Cantabria). In the opinion of these investors, the sanitary fiber manufactured by Sniace could be used by firms such as Textil Santanderina "to make masks and gowns." In this regard, this media has tried to gather the opinion of the company president until just over a month ago,Gema Diaz Real, but it has not been possible to communicate with her.
Sources from the Sniace works council were, to ABC's questions, favorable to the idea ("There are 300 tons stored of this type of fiber"). However, they recalled that they are "in no man's land: we are not fired but we are not active either" since the staff still negotiates the conditions of a termination ERE and the company is under bankruptcy administration. In addition, our interlocutors have pointed out, «we also have no energy ». In this sense, they recalled that the supplier - Catch - He terminated his contract at the beginning of February, ultimately causing the request for liquidation of the Sniace management.
A very valuable fiber
In this sense, the sources consulted among the workers, have recalled that four years ago the factory was reopened after a closed time and that there have been four capital increases, one per year. . «We came from having exhausted the unemployment four years ago And, now we only have the right to one year of unemployment, and Campoco knows if we will be able to take advantage of the government's measures to lengthen unemployment. only manufacturers in Spain of this type of fibers taken from the viscose (fire retardant, sanitary ...). What would now be, mainly, in the hands of China.
From the Cantabrian Government, official sources, have confirmed that the letter was received yesterday and that the return to Sniace's activity would be "great news", but they have clarified that, for this, "financial support" and, of course, the green light of the judge.
For Marta F. Teijerio, PP spokesperson in the Torrelavega City Council and opposition leader, "it would be a very good initiative", but he warned that the main problem would be who would bear the costs of starting the factory. In this sense, he recalled, that «Many people put money into Sniace to be able to pay for their children's education, although not a very important piece, but they have been left with nothing »and recalled that his party promoted a motion of support for workers in the City Council and that this was voted on by all parties.
The Sniace proposal already has a precedent, in the case of a textile company in Carcagente (Valencia). Immersed in the bankruptcy process, the Commercial Court number 3 of Valencia this week authorized the resumption of the activity, to manufacture in an altruistic way protection material, for the sanitary personnel, who fight against the coronavirus.
On the other hand, the judge asked for the collaboration of all the administrations to allow the operation of the company under this new activity.
