The President of the Xunta, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has avoided confirming whether he plans to meet his Executive tomorrow to deliberate on the call for regional elections for July 12, although he insists that his decision will be known “sooner rather than later.”
“I know the electoral times”, Núñez Feijóo has clarified about the possibility of meeting his government on Monday to be able to sign the electoral call decree on July 12 on time.
The legislation establishes a margin of 54 days between the publication of the call and the appointment with the ballot boxes, so if the President of the Xunta did not sign the decree this Monday for publication the following day, the elections could no longer be held on second sunday of july.
However, Núñez Feijóo has explained that he did not address this issue at the presidents’ conference that he held this Sunday with the head of the central executive, Pedro Sánchez, and the rest of the regional leaders because it was not the appropriate forum to do so.
“It makes no sense that at a conference of presidents we talk about the electoral calendar” although, he remarked: “Inevitably we have to hold elections immediately” both in Galicia and in the Basque Country.
Therefore, he has insisted that knowing his “obligations” and “the electoral times”, he will announce his determination “sooner rather than later”.
In this regard, he also highlighted that at the meeting of regional presidents, various leaders of “different ideologies” expressed their fear of possible outbreaks of the coronavirus disease in the autumn, which would make it difficult to call elections once last summer as requested by some parties in the opposition in the Galician community.
