Federico Bini and Rebeca Santos are imposed in the XXVI Travesa a Nado El Ro - La Provincia

The junior and current champion of Open Water Town Hall Cup, Federico Bini, and the world champion in the distances of 800 meters and 3 kilometers plus European 3 and 5 kilometer master champion, Rebeca Santos, were proclaimed Sunday winners of the XXVI Crossing to Swim El Río who was present at all times to the figure of the young swimmer Alejandro Candela, sadly disappeared this year.

The acts of homage to what was outlined as an excellent promise of Lanzarote swimming began yesterday Saturday when a fortnight of relievers covered in his memory the traditional route of the Crossing, from the beach Bajo El Risco (Lanzarote) to Caleta de Sebo (La Graciosa), and continued today when before the start of the test the participants and fans dedicated an emotional minute of applause to Alejandro in the presence of his mother and other relatives, who had previously been given a bouquet of flowers and other gifts in his memory, also between a prolonged ovation of those present.

Only five dropouts

At that time the 607 swimmers who took the exit of the Crossing – which only had five dropouts – already knew the decision adopted at the request of the Safety Board by the Cabildo of Lanzarote, as organizer of the event through the Insular Sports Service, to change the route of the event in the adverse conditions of the sea in the vicinity of Bajo El Risco beach.

The new route set the launching ramp of the Caleta de Sebo dock as the starting point, from where the participants traveled approximately 1.2 kilometers until they reached buoy number 7, which in the form of a cube reminded Alejandro of four large photographs of himself. Once this buoy was over, the swimmers had to take course to the beach of Caleta de Sebo, where the goal was located and after covering 2.6 kilometers in total, traditional distance of the Crossing.

In a tight final, the Lanzarote Federico Bini (CN Nadamás) used 35 minutes and 59 seconds to travel that distance, only two seconds less than second placed Javier Betancort (CN Nadamás) and three less than Óscar Martín (CN Nonadamos), who He took third place on the podium. On the other hand, Toledo Rebeca Santos (CN Master Torrijos) invested 37 minutes and 44 seconds in completing the course. Sara González (CN Nadamás), current champion of the Copa Cabildo of Lanzarote of Aguas Abiertas, was second with a time of 40 minutes and six seconds, and Mar Peña (CN Las Palmas) occupied the third place with 42 minutes and 29 seconds.
