"We regret any inconvenience", with this simple phrase, accompanied by the recognition of a new massive fall in the services of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram ("Some people have had problems connecting to the application family"), Mark Zuckerberg's company has reacted to the new incident on their social networks, the second in a month and the fourth in less than a year. The generalized failure occurred this Sunday for two hours (between one and three in the afternoon Spanish time). The new service interruption coincides with the planned changes in the company for the interaction of all its platforms and a movement among its minority shareholders against the power of Zuckerberg in society.
"The explanation in the changes of servers, which Facebook gave during the fall of March, does not seem enough. And now there have been no explanations, "says Manuel Santaella, an independent computer specialist in networks who points out that, whatever the technical justification this time, the repeated failures show that" the macro grid is vulnerable to failures and are not being addressed ".
The failures have happened in December, November (40 minutes of fall due to testing), March (24 hours due to server changes) and April (two hours still without explanation). The last and most significant coincide with a change in the company's policy towards interaction of its three social networks through a single protocol, which would allow to take advantage of the security qualities in the encrypted messages of WhatsApp (acquired by 1,900 million dollars in 2014) with the social capacity of the other two networks: the largest in the world (Facebook, 2 billion users) and the fastest growing (Instagram). The goal is for users to communicate with each other securely without changing the application and even if they do not have an account on all platforms.
"We want to build the best messaging experience we can and people want it to be fast, simple, reliable and private," says the company that brings together the three applications.
However, the mission has not satisfied everyone. The employees of WhatsApp fear losing privacy in their communications, which was their main flag, before the commercial voracity of the other two platforms, Facebook's main line of business and the incipient goal of Instagram.
Resignation of founders
This last platform has included in March a new purchase facility that allows you to click on a product, select the size or color options, for example, and pay without leaving the application. Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger left the company last fall.
They have not been the only casualties. After the biggest drop in the services of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp In March, the criminal investigation opened in the United States for data management and changes in company policy of Mark Zuckerberg, two of its main and historical managers were relieved: Chris Cox, product manager of Facebook, and Chris Daniels , WhatsApp business manager
The integration plans, which are expected to be operational next year, as well as the management of privacy have also aroused mistrust in some minority shareholders of Facebook. Although its strength is insignificant in a society where Zuckerberg has 75% of class B shares (each is worth 10 votes of Class A), it is a reflection of the discomfort of some social network partners with the policy of its maximum leader.
Trillium Asset Management has called for the mobilization of shareholders against the accumulation of power of Zuckerberg, general director and chairman of the board of directors. The investment group proposes in an official communication the appointment of an independent director, following the models of Google, Microsoft, Apple, Oracle or Twitter, which focuses on "the litany of controversies and negative impacts facing the company. "It would benefit the company, its shareholders, its global community and democracy," concludes the company.
