Eurozone activity registered a historical decline in March, according to Markit

Business activity in the euro area is registering the biggest drop in March since comparable data began to be collected in July 1998, according to the leading indicator published by IHS Markit on Tuesday.

According to the consultancy, which obtains its data from surveying purchasing managers in the services and manufacturing sectors, in March there were general problems for commercial activity caused by increasingly stringent measures to contain the contagion of the coronavirus outbreak.

The fall in activity has been worse for the services sector, mainly in consumer-oriented sectors such as travel, tourism and restaurants.
